/ Research Profile
My main research interests are in political history, particularly the GDR, interwar Austria and the constitutional history of Germany and Austria since 1815. Much of my teaching is directly related to these research fields. Two doctoral students, Leon Quinn and Anna Saunders, recently successfully completed theses on aspects of the history and society of the GDR and eastern Germany in the immediate post-unification period, and I have also supervised two MPhil students with interests in modern Austria.

A short biography I was born in 1967 and grew up in Brighton close to the South Downs. After working for a short time for the circulation and sales department of the Evening Argus I moved north to the University of Salford where I studied French and German. During this time I was fortunate to work for Intertext in Berlin - then still the capital of the German Democratic Republic. After graduating in 1990 I initially completed a teacher training course in modern languages at the then Manchester Polytechnic before beginning PhD work on the GDR at University College London under the supervision of Professor Mary Fulbrook. I have been a lecturer in German at the University of Bristol since 1994 and live south of the river in the Bedminster area of the city. |
